How long crypto transfers take to confirm

When you send a test transfer to verify a wallet — or move funds at closing — the wait before it's confirmed depends entirely on which network you're using. "Confirmed" means the network has accepted the transaction into a block and built enough blocks on top that it's effectively irreversible. Here's a realistic picture.

Why timing varies

Each blockchain produces blocks on its own schedule, and most assets ask for several confirmations before funds are considered final. Network congestion and the fee you attach also matter: a low fee during a busy period can leave a transaction waiting, while a competitive fee gets picked up in the next block.

Rough expectations by network

• Bitcoin (BTC): Blocks arrive roughly every 10 minutes. One confirmation can take a few minutes to over an hour depending on fees and congestion; final settlement is typically reckoned at a few confirmations, so plan for tens of minutes to a couple of hours.
• Ethereum (ETH) and ERC-20 tokens: Blocks every ~12 seconds. Transactions usually confirm within seconds to a couple of minutes, though high gas periods can slow things and raise costs.
• Stablecoins (USDC, USDT): Timing follows whichever chain you send on — fast and cheap on high-throughput networks, slower and pricier on Ethereum mainnet during congestion.
• High-throughput chains (e.g. Solana): Often near-instant finality, seconds in normal conditions.

These are general expectations, not guarantees — actual times move with live network conditions.

Practical tips

• Attach a reasonable fee. Underpaying is the most common cause of a "stuck" transaction.
• Use the same network end to end. Sending a token on the wrong chain is the most common cause of delays and lost funds.
• For a verification test transfer, the amount is tiny, so fees are the only real cost — and confirmation still has to clear before ownership is marked verified.
